A Year Later: Restoring Hope to Tsunami-Ravaged Japan

IWAKI, Japan - The nation of Japan is still suffering from the effects of the devastating earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear meltdown that happened one year ago Sunday.

As a result of the diaster on March 11, 2011, some 19,000 people died and thousands are still missing.

Fortunately hope is still alive. CBN News recently visited one community where Japanese Christians have been working non-stop to help survivors.

Honda Tadakazu said if it hadn't been for Christians, he would have abandoned the seaweed factory that has been in his family for three generations.

"If they had come a month after the tsunami, I wouldn't have made it. But they came two weeks later and started helping me clean up," he told CBN News.

His company, named Honda Shyoji, sits less than 500 yards from the ocean. About a half-hour after the earthquake, multiple tsunamis swept through his factory, destroying everything.

Thanks to the help from Christians like Kouji Oshima, Tadakazu is only months away from re-opening his company.

"Since the earthquake, the Holy Spirit has been telling me to travel around the affected areas and help people get back on their feet," Oshima told CBN News.

Helping the Hurting

The same story is happening all across Japan's tsunami-affected areas. Entire churches, as well as individual Christians, moved quickly in those early days and are still working to help the displaced and hurting.

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sins, and will hear their lands," Daisuke Yokoyama, an evangelist, quoted 2 Chronicles from the Bible.

Moments before the earthquake struck the island nation, Yokoyama and a handful of Christians were in Tokyo for a prayer meeting.

"A few young people met that afternoon to pray and cry out to God to bring a spirit of repentance and revival to our nation and then the earthquake happened," he said.

Within minutes of the tremors, they started ministering to the grief-stricken and frightened people who watched the drama unfold on TV screens.

"We went to the subway and train stations where thousands of people were stranded. We served coffee and tea and tried to share hope with people," Yokoyama recalled.

Sharing God's Love

In the 12 months since the disaster, Yokoyama left Tokyo and moved just 25 miles from the Fukushima nuclear plant where he's using worship to share the gospel with non-believers.

"People are coming to the Lord. They see the love and compassion displayed by Christians, and they are touched," he explained.

Domae Shogo is one of them. A former gang member, he spent 22 years in prison for multiple infractions. Last November, he received an invitation to attend Yokoyama's church and he gave his life to Jesus Christ.

Today, you'll find him making friends among the thousands still displaced by the earthquake and tsunami.

"I spend my time listening to their stories. These are very lonely people who have lost everything, so I am here to show them the love of Christ and to tell them how He changed my life," Shogo told CBN News.

That same change theme echoed this past weekend as Japanese church leaders invited the Rev. Franklin Graham to hold a Celebration of Hope festival in Sendai.

"Did you know God has a plan for your life?" Graham told the crowd.

The event featured a number of Christian artists like Kirk Franklin and others. Graham, the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham, drew nearly 12,000 people over the three-day event.

"I think for the first time many Japanese people are open to the Gospel of Jesus Christ," Graham told CBN News.

It's something Pastor Ikarashi Yoshitaka said he can testify has happened in the weeks and months since the tragedy. He co-leads a congregation not too far from the nuclear power plants.

"This is going to be a sad and happy weekend. Sad because we will remember all those who died last year, but also happy because we are seeing God move like never before," he said.

Prayer Points for Japan from Pastor & Missionary Donnel McLean

Pray for Christians in the Tohoku area, believing for them to be bold and strong in their witness and not to be questioning God negatively.  Oh, that each one be radiant in their witness for Christ and God's Word. Years ago an AG orphanage in Kobe burned to the ground, but I will never forget the two precious Christian Japanese ladies who lost everything actually thanking God and telling everyone our God is alive and He will give us a bigger and better orphanage! It was awesome! And God did, too
Pray for the crews working 24-7 to restore electricity, propane, water, yes, all the necessities of life; yes, and for the roads to be restored so food can be adequately hauled in to alleviate the suffering. This should include road repair so some cut off from everyone can be restored and get the help they need.
Thank God for His protection of the missionaries but let's lift them up to be on fire ambassadors for Christ with countless opportunities to witness for Christ and lead folk to the Lord.
Pray for the Lord's provision for the various teams mobilizing to go to help in the recovery. They absolutely have to find places to stay and have food to eat.  It is a tremendous challenge, but God will lead and provide.
Pray, too, that folk in America will be moved of the Lord to give, even lavishly.  I heard that in the Haiti disaster 80 billion dollars came in but less than a hundred million had come into Japan. In that Japan has been a successful industrial nation maybe some folk think they don't need financial help, but such is not true.  They need the help of the world desperately.  Remember especially The Samaritan's Purse and Convoy of Hope who are pouring in help but need folk to give and help sustain the endless needs.
Thank you, one and all, for praying, for giving!  It behoves us to keep in mind there will be eternal reward and blessing---and, happily, one day when we get to glory there will be many Japanese who are there because we gave, we prayed and we were faithful.  God bless you!

Prayer Points from Pastor Donnel McLean & Consider RJC

Please consider "Reaching Japanese for Christ"

Pastor Donnel McLean's Prayer Points

1.  Pray for discouraged missionaries who are just hanging in there faithfully but are not really expecting anything great!  There may be some even considering moving elsewhere for ministry; let's pray they won't but will be renewed in their expectation for Japan.

2.  Pray for the Japan Evangelical Missionary Association (JEMA) which is the fellowship of evangelical denominations and missions. a.)  Pray they will be moved to commit to mobilizing to take the Good News to every town, village and person by coming up with a strategy for each to do a specific area. There are 118 Christian organizations (denominations, missions) and close to 1700 missionaries---all apart from the national churches.  I've been trying to inspire, encourage and challenge them to come up with a plan to reach all without fail.  b.) Pray that there will be a prayer movement where churches and missions, too, mobilize for days of prayer in obedience to God's command in Joel.  I've written JEMA sharing my heart and I hope---His heart!

3.  Pray for older pastors, now a big majority in the nation as young people are not entering the ministry.  It is tragic that the doors of some churches are being closed because there are not enough young ministers to step in and take over.  Let's believe for the Moses anointing so that even pastors in their seventies and eighties will continue pastoring with even greater vision and anointing.

4.  Pray for Japan's youth, many of whom are losing much hope as they face an uncertain future.  Pray that pastors and evangelists will be mightily anointed to fully preach the Gospel and Christ's call to "deny themselves (their plans) and take up their cross and follow Christ!"  Oh, that many hear His call and respond.

5.  Pray that God will raise up some powerfully anointed Japanese ministers to be like Charles Finney and be instruments in His hands to bring about an awakening.

6.  Pray for Dawn Burkner who has a vision to mobilize missions and individuals with the sole commitment to go to every village with the Good News.  Her email is dawndy1@hotmail.com  Pray for great success and response by both missionaries and nationals to catch the vision, too.

7.  Pray for a prayer burden to sweep across the nation moving every church to heed God's command to unite in days of prayer with fasting.  I sent a letter to JEMA and also JAG sharing this burden and vital challenge.  Pray that Japanese Christians will believe that what He is doing in China He will do in Japan, too.  That's His heart but they (missionaries, too) must come to grips with the realization that our part---fasting and praying---is a vital, essential part of the equation!  If we don't do our part then the revival will never come! Oh, for the Church, missionaries and nationals, "get it"!

8.  Remember our Japanese fellow Christians, many of whom need to enter into total commitment to Christ and that many will become soul winners, on fire for God.  Very often many get discouraged and depressed because of seeing so little change, so little growth.  Oh, for every member to get on fire for the Lord.

9.  Very often only one member of the family comes to Christ which means they usually have extreme opposition; therefore they need encouragement and strength to stand true and not give in to even their family's pleas to recant.  It is really hard.  Pray other Christians will reach out to these and encourage them.

10.  Pray that in the current extreme crisis churches and Christians will be especially led to be strong witnesses and to help in various ways.  Oh, that many have real opportunities to share the message of hope we have in Christ.  Many lost loved ones and are in deep need of someone to come alongside with the message of hope we have in Christ.
